Google.org Support for AgriConnect
According to Google.org, the organization is supporting the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the broader World Bank Group (WBG) under the World Bank Group’s AgriConnect initiative. The announcement was shared by the Director of Google.org for APAC, EMEA & Global Stronger Communities.
Goal to Reach 1 Million Farmers
The collective goal of this initiative is to help 1 million farmers access crucial livelihood-improving services by the end of 2027. Google.org is providing $2.5 million in support to help the WBG expand digital public infrastructure (DPI) for agriculture, which functions as shared digital systems acting as "public roads" for online services.
Expansion of the Open Network for Agriculture
Following a successful pilot in India, the WBG will build an AI-enabled Open Network for Agriculture (ONA) across several countries spanning Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. The network connects public and private sector service providers in a shared digital network, allowing farmers to avoid separate, disconnected apps.
Access to Services and Ecosystem Alliance
Using a single platform, farmers can access vital resources such as digital farmer IDs, credit lines, direct subsidy payments, markets to sell produce, and voice-powered advice in their local language regarding farming, weather, pricing, and finances. This support builds on an existing alliance between Google and the World Bank Group aimed at accelerating digital transformation in emerging markets.
